Do you receive rejection letters after applying for a medical residency?

I've sent in my residency applications and have started to receive invitations to interview. If a school does NOT decide to interview you will they send you a rejection email or will they just NOT contact you.

You will not receive rejection letters. You will be matched to the programs based on their selections and your choices.

Dependent on the type of residency you are applying for the competition can be very stiff. Some residencies get a lot of request and others have trouble filling their vacancies. A lot depends on the key factors. 1. Type of residency (surgery and orthopedics are very tough, some others are not as tough) 2. Medical school attended ( you hear a lot of people say "It doesn't matter where you go to school, they still call you doctor!"... but if you happened to graduate from Harvard it might just carry a little more weight than a lower teir school) 3. Grades and other activites.

So... have patience, and good luck!

You do not receive rejection letters.

It is done through a match system. You list your top residency choices, the schools list their top candidates and then they match the school to the candidate.

No one is really "rejected" unless the school simply chose not to put the candidate on the list.

You should see someone to discuss the best options on how to best rank your schools. It is often not wise to put your first choice as #1 if it is a total long shot. i.e. If your #3 school puts you down as #1, but another candidate (who is that school's #2 candidate) puts that school down as #1, that other candidate matches and you do not match at that school.

Definitely talk to an advisor on how to make your list.
